Critics of LIV Golf accused the Saudis of backing the new tour as a form of “sportswashing” its reputation.īut the legal battles, acrimony and competition for the best golfers between LIV and the PGA and DP World Tour suddenly ended Tuesday with the announcement that the three would form a combined for-profit company. It led to a year-long legal battle that banned LIV golfers from the established tours and brought some unwanted attention to Saudi’s human rights record. The PIF’s creation of LIV Golf a year ago, reportedly at a cost of $2 billion, attracted many of the sport’s top players away from the US-based PGA Tour and Europe-based DP World Tour by offering big dollar prize money. While some of those are pension funds for a country’s citizens or public employees, others, like the PIF, operate the way a private sector investment firm might, trying to make money through a diversified portfolio of investments.īut what makes Saudi Arabia’s fund different from those private investment firms is that since the country faces widespread condemnation for its human rights record, its investments in sports and other entertainment companies can be seen as an attempt to polish that tarnished reputation. It is ranked only the seventh-largest in the world, according to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute. A state-owned investment fund like the PIF is not unique. It is aiming to top $1 trillion within a few years. The Saudi Public Investment Fund is a government-controlled fund that has $650 billion in assets under management, according to its most recent filing. But that is only a small sliver of the money it is sinking into a number of prominent businesses elsewhere around the globe as the kingdom moves to diversify away from a dependence on oil income – and as the petro-kingdom tries to achieve its political goals. ![]() Saudi Arabia’s mountain of cash has upended the world of professional golf.

Lanai, he estimated, was only 12 miles away.īut the canoe was being battered by choppy waves and gale-force winds, and the capsized hull rode low in the water, making it difficult to accurately gauge distance. After a night of clinging to the overturned hull of capsized voyaging canoe Hokule'a, ignored by close-passing ships and aircraft, flares sputtering futilely in the darkness, and islands growing smaller on the churning horizon, in the mid-morning of March 17, 1978, crewman Eddie Aikau insisted on paddling his surfboard for help. Eddie cared about others and took care of others. he guarded life, and he lost his own, trying to guard ours. Whenever I feel down, I look at Eddie and I recall his dream. "Eddie had this dream about finding islands the way our ancestors did. "Come, I want to show you something." Nainoa steps into another room and points to a picture of a young man, tanned with long hair, smiling, and looking as if about to talk with you – it is Eddie. Eddie was never seen again, Hokule'a finally found. Fearing that they might drift ever further away from help, Eddie Aikau, lifeguard on the big surf beach of the North Shore of O'ahu and at home on his surfboard in even 30-foot waves, left on a surfboard to get help. For hours airplanes flew overhead between the islands but did not spot them. I must tell you about Eddie, because he had, and still has, great influence on me he's one of my great teachers." Nainoa tells of how Hokule'a, a few hours after leaving Honolulu harbor, capsized in the Moloka'i Channel and floated upside down, the crew clinging to her overturned hulls. The double-hulled voyaging canoe developed a leak in one of the hulls and later capsized in stormy weather about twelve miles south of the island of Molokai. The Hokule'a left the Hawaiian Islands on March 16, 1978. At 31 years of age, Aikau was selected for this voyage as a crew member. For example, if there are two groups of patients experiencing different treatment effects studies in two randomised control trials (RCTs) reporting conflicting results, the meta-analytic average is representative of neither group, similarly to averaging the weight of apples and oranges, which is neither accurate for apples nor oranges. Meta-analysis has also been criticized for averaging differences among heterogeneous studies because these differences could potentially inform clinical decisions. If individual studies are systematically biased due to questionable research practices (e.g., data dredging, data peeking, dropping studies) or the publication bias at the journal level, the meta-analytic estimate of the overall treatment effect may not reflect the actual efficacy of a treatment. However, there are some methodological problems with meta-analysis. Not only can meta-analyses provide an estimate of the unknown effect size, it also has the capacity to contrast results from different studies and identify patterns among study results, sources of disagreement among those results, or other interesting relationships that may come to light with multiple studies. Meta-analytic results are considered the most trustworthy source of evidence by the evidence-based medicine literature. It is thus a basic methodology of Metascience. ![]() The aim then is to use approaches from statistics to derive a pooled estimate closest to the unknown common truth based on how this error is perceived. Peig Sayers’ home on the Great Blasket Island. ![]() It seems to have been the English Scholar and writer Dr Robin Flower, An Bláithín as he was known on the Blasket where he spent the summers between 1910 and the 1930s who discovered Peig.Ī medievalist and deputy keeper of Manuscripts in the British Museum, Flower was the first to take substantial collections from her, including sound recordings which do not survive. She was not only the daughter of a renowned west Kerry story teller, Tomás Sayers, but Padraig O Guithín her island husband was an accomplished teller of Fenian tales. Peig herself, Níl Deireadh Ráite reminds us, was steeped in the oral tradition. To be fair, a true appreciation of the skill involved in the oral storytelling as a highly stylized art that went back to Homer only really began around the time of Peig’s death with the ground breaking work The Singer of Tales, by Harvard scholar A B Lord. They had the longest memories too able to” contact trace” every family history in the parish and beyond. This is not mere following of fashion, but a return to what was in fact the case: Many of us who grew up in the pre-television which lasted well into the 1970s in some parts, well remember how it was the women who were the storehouses of the past how often it was the woman - always known by her first name - who had a liking for cards and who told the most nuanced fireside stories. There may also be a new appreciation of Peig as a real female and as a female teller of tales. The new digital and social media age, with its acceptance of mixed platforms, has maybe paved the way for a new appreciation of the ancient art of oral storytelling, the format employed in this book tempts us to think. In any case, Peig’s stories were mostly written down and not recorded at all. Made on a wire recorder plugged into the electricity, they have survived while other wax recordings have not. The recordings themselves are remarkable. While the focus traditionally has been on the Blasket “writers” it is arguable if proper deference has never been accorded to the ephemeral spoken or oral tradition of the island certainly not in book form, and certainly not in the kind of multi-platform approach here where the dialogue prompted by live interviewers is included, the whole book is both in Irish and in English and accompanied by CDs of the original recordings. If you’re a DIY enthusiast, these steps for how to make a carpenter bee trap will help you remove burrowing carpenter bees from your property. Bees will think that the brighter light coming from the mason jar is their exit and make their way down toward the jar and end up trapped rather than outside as they expected. Since the side holes are drilled at an upward angle, sunlight cannot shine down into them. The clear mason jar at the bottom shines light up into the main hole of the block. Once the bees enter the side holes, they climb up and find the main channel as they explore the best place to lay their eggs. Using a softer, untreated wood that carpenter bees would normally choose helps encourage them to investigate the trap. The advantage of a carpenter bee trap is that it includes premade tunnel systems for them to naturally want to explore and utilize. If an existing hole is available, they often start there and dig deeper to suit their needs.
